In 1968 Robert Adamson moved to Balmain and he was inspired by the “FREE ZARB” posters around Sydney (the posters were in support of John Zarb, a postman imprisoned for refusing to serve in Vietnam), as well as his reading of Pound’s Cantos and Enid Starkie’s biography on Rimbaud, to announce his arrival in letters painted three feet high on a corrugated-iron fence opposite his new house on Church Street saying: “FREE EZRA/ RIMBAUD” (Adamson Inside Out 283).
